LAST LIGHTTHE HORROR MOVIE COMPANION
FIELD NOTES / The October programme

Thirteen nights. A whole October’s worth of horror.

A smaller Halloween challenge with room for work, friends, and a few nights of actual sleep.

Choose thirteen dates, not thirteen consecutive days

Spread three screenings across most weeks, then keep October 31 for the finale. Put your longer or more demanding picks on the dates when you will have attention for them. Leave the unscheduled evenings alone. A missed night can move without creating a backlog.

Give each slot a job

Use these thirteen prompts: an old favourite; a silent-era film; a classic monster; a haunted house; a slasher; a creature feature; a horror comedy; a film from another country; a director you have never tried; a recommendation from your partner; a film you disagree about; a wild card; your Halloween-night favourite. These are prompts, not claims that one film belongs to only one category.

Make four picks together

For a couple, each person chooses four films and you agree on the last five. A Coven lets both of you nominate and vote; mutual yeses can fill those shared slots. Keep individual vetoes outside the scoring contest. Save the agreed order to the shared lineup and import it into your own countdown.

An example first three nights

Start with Halloween if you want an immediately recognisable slasher, Nosferatu for a historical change of pace, and Frankenstein for a creature tragedy. Or use the same three slots for your own favourites. The useful part of the challenge is the shape of the month; the titles should belong to you.

Make the list yours.
